Science and Mathematics Librarian
Under the general supervision of the Associate Dean for Public Services, and working with the College of Science and Mathematics (CSM), the Science and Mathematics Librarian initiates, plans, and leads services that support the information needs of the students, faculty and staff of that College. Responsibilities include networking with faculty and students of the College, instruction, reference, networking with faculty and students of the College, selecting and curating digital services, and other activities.
- Liaison/networking activities
- Regularly meets with faculty the College of Science and Mathematics (including Departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Kinesiology, Mathematics, Physics, and Statistics) to discuss collections, services and policies as well as instructional support for students in these departments. Develops relationships within these departments through personal visits, participation groups and events, and collaborations in support of teaching and learning. Consults on emerging practices in scholarly communication and publishing, including services provided by Digital Commons, Cal Poly's institutional repository. Advocates for and supports use of data including bioinformatics and GIS. Presents and interprets Library services and policies to users from both within and outside the Library.
- Instructional and consultative services
- Prepares and delivers orientations, tours, and lectures, and develops web-based tutorials and guides regarding information services and resources relevant to students and faculty of the College. Acts as an expert consultant to faculty and students for resources in the sciences and mathematics, including chemistry information resources such as SciFinder Scholar. Acts as a consultant with faculty and students to assist them with information searches, citation management, and instructional technology.
- Reference & information services
- Provides assistance with both general and specialized reference questions, by appointment, by email, phone, online chat, and at reference service points in the Library. Collaborates with other Librarians to support online reference services. Works creatively to provide tools and services across a wide range of science and mathematics topics.
- Selecting and curating collections
- Evaluates and selects monographs, serials, and digital resources for the College of Science and Mathematics. Encourages teaching faculty to be involved in acquisition and periodic review of information resources. Coordinates activities with other librarian selectors, especially in the area of electronic resources and in interdisciplinary areas. Works with Collection Management staff to support information resource acquisition and access for the students, faculty and staff in the biological sciences, chemistry and biochemistry, kinesiology, mathematics, physics, and statistics departments. Collections are also developed through shared electronic resource acquisitions by the California State University (CSU) system. May participate in managing and curating digital assets, including data and other unique scholarly or teaching resources.
- Digital and web-based activities
- Participates in new and ongoing projects involving digital resources, web access, and other initiatives, including interactive and multimedia web-based applications.
- Other activities
- Participates in Library initiatives and task groups. Represents the Library on University, CSU system-wide and professional committees. Initiates and develops contacts outside the University, represents the Library at conferences and participates in activities of national organizations (e.g. Association of College & Research Libraries, Science and Technology Information Section; Special Libraries Association; American Society for Information Science and Technology; American Chemical Society Division of Chemical Information; Medical Library Association).
