Locate, Access and Retrieve Information
PolyCAT (Online Catalog)
PolyCAT is the online catalog for the Robert E. Kennedy Library at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, California. PolyCAT will retrieve information about books, maps, periodicals, videos, government documents and other items held by the Kennedy Library.
Locating Periodicals on PolyCAT
Periodicals take many forms at the Kennedy Library. Let's become familiar with some of the terminology that you will see in the PolyCAT record:
Bound
If the volume you are looking for is listed as "BOUND" in the holdings record, it is shelved in the Main Collection (2nd-5th floors).
Copy the call number (e.g. S22 .A7 ) and use the call number guide (shown below) to determine which floor the call number refers to:
A-F 2nd Floor
G-PM 3rd Floor
PN-Q 4th Floor
R-Z 5th Floor
Microfilm
If the volume you are looking for is listed as "MICROFILM" in the holdings record, it is shelved in the Microforms Room in the Reference Department (ground floor).
Copy the item call number (e.g. S631 .B4 "Better Crops"), and go to the back wall of the Microforms Room to search the microfilm cabinets.
Unbound
If the volume you are looking for isn't listed as either BOUND or Microfilm, it is kept in the Current Periodicals Department on the first floor, near the entrance of the Library.
Online
If the volume you are looking for is listed as "ONLINE" in the holdings record, the volume is available online.
Click the online link on the holdings record to access the journal and determine what is available.
Sample Journal Searches
The following sample searches highlight a variety of typical journal searching scenarios:
Scenario #1. You want to see if the Library owns a particular journal (e.g.,The Journal of Consumer Marketing)
From the Library's Home Page select Search PolyCAT.
Next, from PolyCAT's home page select Journal Title and type in the journal's title.
Click Search.
The next screen we supplies us with some important information:
Call number: HF540 J67
Holdings: The Library has from 1983-2003 bound and held in the stacks
Online Access: The library has online access to this title from 1994 forward
Click View the online version: v.11 1994-
We are automatically linked to the online version of Journal of Consumer Marketing
Please note that many journals indexed in PolyCAT are now linked directly to the online publisher/vendor!
Scenario #2. Journals by Subject Area
You are looking for journals within a specific subject area (e.g., Marketing, Management, Finance)
To locate periodicals by subject in PolyCAT, select the SUBJECT tab from PolyCAT's home page. Next type the subject followed by two dashes (--) and the word periodicals. For example, if you want a list of management-related journals type: management -- periodicals
Click Search.
Select Management Periodicals
(Note that there are 28 journal titles available on management)
Select the journal The Academy of Management Review.
The next screen we supplies us with some important information:
Call number: HD 28. A243F540 J67
Holdings: The Library has from 1976 forward bound and held in the stacks
NO Online Access: The library does NOT have online access to this title through PolyCAT
Latest Issue: The most recent issue is held in Current Periodicals Room
Locating Books
The Kennedy Library owns thousands of books on business administration, management, marketing, finance, economics, technology, engineering and industrial technology-related topics. The content level of the books vary from business to general to scholarly to technical information.
You can search PolyCAT by Title, Author, Subject or Keyword.
